The purpose of this exhibition is to raise awareness of citizenship, especially young people, about this drama and the work of Koinonia Community: a community founded in Kenya by the Comboni missionary Renato Sesana, known as Father Kizito, in order to assist street children, orphans and other vulnerable young people.

In Nairobi, as in many other cities in Africa, there is a growing phenomenon of street children: children who choose to live on the street to avoid situations of family abuse or extreme poverty. They live in a pack, they sleep outdoors, they give alms and petty thefts and seek refuge in drugs so as not to feel cold, loneliness and fear.

This photographic exhibition is part of the broader international cooperation project of the Grande Quercia Association called 'Moringa per tutti', currently under development, which sees the contribution of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Koinonia Community partnership.

The first reception centers of Koinonia Community are born with the precise intention of becoming a point of reference for the street children of the slums of Kibera and Kawangware, in the south-west outskirts of Nairobi. Children are approached in the street and invited to attend these centers, where they have access to clean water to wash themselves, sleep in a safe place, eat at least three times a day, find listening and affective confidence with educators and an educational accompaniment.

The first reception centers are, therefore, the beginning of a path of recovery and profound change for African children and young people.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Besh was also present in Italy, a former street boy who met more than 1000 students from the schools that joined the initiative: being able to listen to his story from his live voice was a great opportunity for everyone.

Besh, whose real name is Duncan Njoroge Waweru was rescued from the street who was about 8-10 years old, in 2005, he grew up in the Koinonia Community Kenya shelters, then at the Domus Mariae (Koinonia boarding school). He then worked as an educator in the reception center where he grew up while studying to become a social worker, graduated in 2018, he has continued to work in the same center as a social worker, who also follows the sick who attend the dispensary.

Besh is a boy of lively intelligence who has had a life experience that led him today to want to give back to other children what he himself received from Koinonia.
